What work-related deductions can I claim?

A deduction lowers your taxable income, so its real value is the deduction times your marginal rate. Claim $3,562 in deductions on a 30% rate and you save about $1,069 in tax. You need records for everything you claim, and it must genuinely relate to earning your income.

Working from home — the fixed-rate method

The ATO's revised fixed-rate method lets you claim 70c for every hour worked from home, which covers energy, phone, internet, stationery and computer consumables. You need a record of your actual hours (a diary or roster). 760 hours works out to $532. The alternative actual-cost method can be worth more if your real expenses are high, but it needs itemised records.

Car — cents per kilometre

For work travel in your own car you can claim 91c per business kilometre with no logbook, up to 5,000 km a year — a maximum of $4,550. Over that, the logbook (actual-cost) method can claim more if your running costs are higher. Normal home-to-work commuting isn't claimable.

Deductions FAQ

How much is the working-from-home deduction?

70c per hour under the fixed-rate method — so $532 for 760 hours. Keep a record of your hours.

Do I need receipts?

Yes — you need to be able to substantiate what you claim: a record of your WFH hours, how you worked out your business kilometres, and receipts for other purchases.

Can I claim my commute?

Generally no — travel between home and your regular workplace is private. Trips between jobs or work sites can be claimable.
